Air fryers are the most-used appliance in most kitchens — and most of them cook your food inside a basket coated with PTFE, better known as Teflon. Here's why that matters, what to look for instead, and the seven PFAS-free air fryers I actually recommend.
Why most air fryers have a toxin problem
The typical air fryer basket is aluminum coated with PTFE — a member of the PFAS family, the “forever chemicals” that never break down in your body or the environment. Under normal use that coating scratches (metal tongs, abrasive sponges, dishwasher cycles) and begins flaking microplastic-like particles into your food. And because air fryers concentrate high heat in a small chamber, they can push nonstick coatings past the temperatures where PTFE starts to degrade and off-gas.

It's not the air-frying method — that's just fast convection cooking.
